A ventilation tube is an essential medical device used to support breathing in patients with respiratory failure. With advancing technology, these tubes are now made from materials that are more comfortable, less traumatic, and cause less damage to the vocal cords. Miniaturized ventilators allow patients greater mobility and comfort. The ventilation tube is usually inserted through the mouth, nose, or trachea under sedation or general anesthesia and connected to a ventilator to control the patient’s breathing. This ensures oxygenation, removal of carbon dioxide, and relaxation of the respiratory muscles in patients with respiratory failure. After the tube is removed, temporary hoarseness and coughing are common but patients typically return to normal breathing shortly.
